Hydroxyapatite (HA) derived from biological waste remains an attractive calcium-phosphate bioceramic, owing to its chemical similarity to the mineral phase of human bone and its potential use in hard-tissue repair. The bovine-bone-derived HA has been widely reported, however, a comparative assessment of thermally treated bovine-derived HA to commercial HA is provided in the present study with emphasis on particle size, phase composition, functional groups, morphology and elemental features for preliminary bioceramic screening. The femur bone of the cow was cleaned, defatted, ground, dried and thermally treated with two-step heating to eliminate organic components and to promote HA crystallization. The obtained powder was characterized using particle size analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The bovine-derived powder was characterized by nanoscale particle.
